I find it baffling that anything with physical mass can spin 450 times in a second!

Did the notion of it being a Binary system where both stars will eventually go and this is just a one out of a trillion shot the orbiting star goes first. The star that the pulsar is orbiting is just waiting its turn. Also the elongated orbit may be caused by gravitational influences from another source, such as a nearby star of cloud of dark matter.
