VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Nov. 25) - A Canadian man died Saturday, four days after police used a Taser stun-gun on him because he reportedly was acting erratically in a store, police said. He was the third person to die in recent weeks in Canada after being shocked by the hand-held weapon.

What's Your Take?

Robert Knipstrom, 36, died in a hospital after two officers used pepper spray, a Taser and their batons to subdue the British Columbia resident. Police earlier said Knipstrom was extremely agitated, aggressive and combative with the two officers who responded. He was conscious and speaking when he was taken to the hospital.

The cause of death has yet to be determined. Although a Taser was used against Knipstrom, it was not immediately clear what role, if any, it played in his death, said Inspector Brendan Fitzpatrick.

Investigations into Knipstrom's death have been launched separately by the British Columbia Coroner's Office and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, police said at a news conference Saturday.

The case comes as Canadian police face intense criticism over the death of Robert Dziekanski, a Polish immigrant who died at Vancouver airport last month after officers used a Taser and manhandled him.

A Nova Scotian man also died earlier this week, 30 hours after being shocked with the Taser at a jail where he was being held on assault charges.

It'a a shame that more people aren't posting. There are families minus a loved one today -because a taser-happy cops enjoyed inflicting pain on their fellow human beings. sad.

bkjc, truth is there are policeofficers who put their lives on the line everyday, you being a police officer know this better than people like me. I on the other hand know only what type of cops runs my neighborhood. And I can tell you the ones running things give decent cops a bad name. Tasers are used by more bad cops than good ones. Tasers need to be taken out of the hands of policeofficer for the mire fact that bad cops do use them to give themselves 'highs'. Having been tasered seven times i can tell you if you are going to kill me shoot me . It is a more merciful way to die. Good night.

"There is a range of population groups which it is likely to be inappropriate to use a taser at any time, as to do so would carry additional health- and life-threatening risks over and above those for other sections of the community." "This group would include pregnant women (risk of abortion), people with cardiovascular disease (risk of heart attack and stroke), and people affected by the use of stimulant drugs (risk of sudden death). Other groups to be considered in this context would include children, adolescents, older people and people with mental illness. Of course, any risk assessment in this context must be made in the knowledge that the alternative is a firearm and lethal force."
--A 2002 Australian report on the potential dangers posed by TASERs

In Florida they taser all the above.

Again ...we don't know everyone nor can we predict anyone's behavior...I've seen plenty of people fight through being tazered and also run away while being tazed...we don't know what people are capable of and I'll say it again..we follow a use of force continuum...we react with force when met with force..what happened in the videos before hand that we didn't see? What was edited out? what was not captured? We will never know because it wouldn't make for good contraversy.

tis a shame that the good things are never reported. it's why our country is going so south. (no offense to southerners, just a midwestern phrase for saying things are going so bad) xoxoxoxo to all. and bkjc.. special good vibes to you.. I am happy you have seen what most americans have to say, not just the violent criminals. I believe you will have a better life as a cop to know what us folk are really thinking.. god bless xoxoxoxox
