Jesse Helms and George Wallace were both racist southerners. Wallace changed his mind and asked forgiveness. Helms never did.

"MLK was a registered Republican"? Hello! The Martin Luther King Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, which ought to have some knowledge of these things, says that no record of such a registration exists. Exactly why King would choose to make common cause with the party of Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, David Duke, and Trent Lott is beyond me, anyway. If jgreen3947 knows of some documentation of this, he (or she) should get in touch with the authorities at Stanford immediately. Ron Smith

Helms was part of the Dixiecrats who switched from the Democrat to the Republican party. This is when the party of Lincoln became the party of intolerance and hatred, a view of America whcih it still embraces.
