Jobless claims surge

WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits soared last week.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that claims for unemployment benefits rose by 35,000 to 380,000. Private economists had expected claims would rise by a smaller 18,000.

The report on jobless claims came a day ahead of a report on unemployment for April. Economists expect that report will show that the unemployment rate edged up to 5.2 percent in April, from 5.1 percent in March. The economy is expected to lose 70,000 jobs, the fourth straight month of job losses.

The unempolyment rate is only counted by who is presently on unemployment what about the ones whos unemployment has run out and are not working. There not counted any more. Also anyone on on social service and does not work are not counted. So what is that percent really of unempolyed people.

I agree with mgva0460. I have had a similar experience except I am not on disability. I had 31 years with the company, I was let go under duress by a unethical company, they systematically constructed a discharge case against me(age discrimination under the disguise of performance issues), and are in the process of hiring younger workers for less compensation. They started with customer service, expanded to the sales force, now the truck drivers are being replaced with outside contracting. Smart way of doing business, but really hurts the regular employee trying to make a living.
