Lawmaker Calls Mexicans 'Peasants'

DENVER (April 21) - A Colorado legislator known for kicking a photographer was ordered to leave the podium of the state House of Representatives on Monday because he called Mexican workers "illiterate peasants."

State Rep. Douglas Bruce, who has a history of provoking controversy, made the comment during debate on a bill that would allow the state to help immigrant workers get temporary federal visas. The measure is intended to ease a shortage of farm workers in the state.

"I would like to have the opportunity to state at the microphone why I don't think we need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in Colorado," Bruce said.

His outburst drew an audible gasp from the House.

"How dare you," said state Rep. Kathleen Curry, a Democrat who was serving as chairwoman during the debate. She told the Republican lawmaker he was no longer recognized to speak.

House Minority Leader Mike May, head of the GOP caucus, said legislative leaders were trying to determine what action to take against Bruce.

Rep. Terrance Carroll, a Democrat, said the remark could result in a formal ethics complaint that would require a hearing and possible suspension, censure or expulsion.

Bruce later defended his remarks.

"I looked up 'illiterate' in the dictionary and it means somebody who is lacking in formal education or is unable to read and write," he said. "I don't think these people who are planning to come over here and pick potatoes or peaches are likely to have much of a formal education. I looked up the word 'peasant.' The word 'peasant' means a person who works in agricultural fields.

"These people, most of them, don't speak English. Most of them haven't had any formal education, that's why they're coming over here. I don't blame them for trying, but I don't think we should pave the way for more aliens to come here," he said.

Bruce became the first Colorado lawmaker censured by the House after he kicked a newspaper photographer for taking his picture during a prayer.

Republicans later removed him from the powerful State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee because he refused to co-sponsor a resolution honoring military veterans. Bruce said he believed resolutions were a waste of time because they have no legal effect.

The Mexican Consulate in Denver did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Isn't there still Free Speech allowed there? I thought Colorado was one of the 50 states that permit people to voice their opinions? If you agree or disagree with him isn't relevant to the fact that in the US he is allowed to say whatever he wants. So why all the flipping out about it? If you don't agree with him, then don't vote for him again.

That man does not need to be re-elected to office. Everyone is always worried about racism. Mr. Bruce is a fine example of a racist person to me. The mexican people are not the only nationality who lie, cheat , and steal. I'm married to a mexican man and I'm damned proud of it. My husband is legally here in the United States. He works very hard at his job to provide for our family. I just wish that half of the American people were as accepting and would welcome me into their home , as were the people that treated me very well went I went to Mexico a couple of years ago. What about people who come from other countries, that get a free ride from the United States. I wounder if Mr. Bruce is a member of the KKK. I think that he forgot his white hood at home. I thought that the United States was moving forward in the discrimination department. With people like him in office it looks like we are going backwards in time. What do you want to bet that Mr. Bruce's family ancester

I do not think this man should loose his job because he used one of the "rights" that we have here in this country and that is of FREE SPEECH -- why should he loose his job? We haven't heard his speech - we have only heard excerps, how can we make a decision - if it was right or wrong? I wonder what is wrong with America educating other nations ?? What happened to that old proverb GIVE A MAN A FISH AND YOU FEED HIM FOR THE DAY, TEACH HIM HOW TO FISH AND HE IS FED FOR LIFE" -- I serious wonder if these people are really wanting to put their life in danger to cross into this country or is life so impoverished there that they can only "dare" to come in any way they can?
As a teenager, I went out to pick tomatoes for a few days to earn money to go to the fair - wonderful experience for me. It MUST be worth the sun and hard labor to live in this country, or else why go to the trouble?

A Cuatemochi.. Nice Aztec name, but the reality is the reality of what is real. One thing about Mexicans that none can deny.. They have the reverse philosphy of the educated and should I say "Christian" world, where they teach the golden rule. That is; do unto others as you would have others do unto you.... with Mexicans as a society, it is "Do unto others before they do unto you, because if they had a chance, they would do it to you first. ' Cheat, lie, steal from each other is as common as breathing. Just like how the majority of kidnappers in Mexico are the police.. Todos son mentirosos, rateros y asi es.. Es una lastima, pero los Mexicanos son asi.... si que son buenos trabajadores, pero si tienen la oportunidad de robarte, los van a hacerlo.....asi es.. En mi negocio, todos me han robado...Todos son ladrones.......desde los mas pobre hasta los mas ricos... Asi es y aprenden de usar la sistema de pronto de llegar aqui. Y mas porque hay muchos Mexicanos en oficina de welfa
