DEKALB, Ill. (Aug. 10) - Patrick Sheridan watched the monster truck roll onto and over four crumpled cars, noting that the behemoth appeared to be getting close to spectators who'd gathered for an afternoon demonstration.

Bystanders tend to two people who were among nine onlookers injured after a monster truck drove into a crowd Thursday in DeKalb, Ill.

The 16-year-old said the driver and staff from the Thursday show's sponsor, NAPA Auto Parts, even asked observers to stand back from the cordoned-off street after the truck's first few passes.

But the final pass "was like a full-out jump because he, like, floored it and it just went up and landed on the back tires and kept going," Sheridan said.

The truck veered into the crowd of about 100, injuring at least nine people - two seriously - before breaking through a wooden fence and stopping on nearby railroad tracks, officials said.

"It sounded like he couldn't get the gas off and like it kept going and going and going," Sheridan said.

DeKalb resident James Vesely described "just this sound of steel crunching."

"I ran over to see if it hit anybody's car, and I saw a woman and a little girl ... lying on the ground with dirt on them," he told The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle.

Three adults and six children from the crowd were taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, officials said. Seven were treated and released by Thursday night.

But a mother and her 4-year-old daughter were transferred in serious condition to trauma hospitals in Rockford, said Kishwaukee hospital spokeswoman Sharon Emanuelson.

One was taken to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center and the other was sent to Rockford Memorial Hospital, said Kishwaukee nursing supervisor Jennifer Cedillo. OSF Saint Anthony spokeswoman Therese Michels confirmed that one of the victims was at the hospital's trauma center, but Rockford Memorial declined to release any information Thursday night.

At least one person also refused medical treatment at the scene, DeKalb Fire Chief Lanny Russell said. The 44-year-old truck driver did not appear to be injured in the accident, said City Manager Mark Biernacki.

The demonstration was part of a monster truck tour sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts and Russell said the city had given the local NAPA store permission to close the street for the event.

Jerry Nix, a spokesman for NAPA's parent company, Genuine Parts Co., said he could not comment on the incident. A message left at the store near the accident site after business hours Thursday was not immediately returned.

While Tobie DePauw, manager of North Central Cyclery on the block where the accident happened, didn't see the incident, he said he saw the truck performing stunts beforehand.

"It looked very precarious," he said.

Evidently the throttle linkage jambed or the throttle return spring broke off. IMHO, a member of the Pit Crew should have a remote control to activate an "Engine Kill Swich/switces" to kill the ignition and fuel pumping systems on the vehiicles if things go awry at a show.

Hopefully, the victims of this unfortunate accident will recover from their injuries quickly.

stuff like this happens way too often. Air shows car races, ecspecially rally car races. No show or race of any kind should be permitted with the most precaution that could be taken. Any event without some type of burrier or something to that effect should not be allowed at all. Even sometimes this doesn't stop an incident from happening, when u have something traveling at 200 plus MPH , steel doesn't stop on impact, tires have beheaded people in the stands behind a 12" fence half way up the bleechers. Its all chance. Its wehter or not u as a fan r willing to take it. there can never ever be enough protection for the fans of all events of this type or any other for that fact. Too many planes have crashed in the past few years in air shows and I wonder why they still allow having them. It all has to do with politics I'm afraid. Its all abot the money. people matter no more. life means absolutley nothing to the people putting on these affairs. what else is there to say. Be careful the ne

It would be unfortunate to happen anywhere. It was surely accidental yet a very sad thing to happen. We can all pray that thiese people will be ok and better safeguards are put in place for the future events. I have seeb many monster truck shows and most take safety very seriously. I love the shows but want the fans safe.

I am from this area that some of you are bad mouthing. my son plays baseball with one of the children who was at this event and injured and I am just sickened by the comments. People were injured little innocent children who think monster trucks are big and cool and you make redneck, toothless, cousin sexing loser comments. Yes this is a farming community so what! Living in this area I would guess that majority of the population of DeKalb has a higher education then the ignorant people on this page putting down the parents who brought their children to watch this show. Take a good look in the mirror and realize that you are a pitiful, shallow person and grow up.

For those of you who are making excuses for the monster truckers. In our city
they used to have Monster truck rallies too, BUT....they held them inside a closed
arena.....not on a public or private street. Would you go to see the Indy 500 if you
could just stand on the sidelines and watch....with no barriers? I think not. Every-
one responsible for that Monster truck rally should be held accountable, especially
if there were no safety provided for onlookers.

People like who? The folks in DeKalb you were making fun of or the other jerks who were making fun of them too?

Lefrog1928 10:03:00 PM Aug 10 2007

Actually we need people like them to differenciate them from the educated, sensitive, intelligent, compasionate, well read, decent and productive rest of us, another HA!
