Odor Leads Officials to 'Horror House'

TRENTON, New Jersey (Aug. 16) - A rotten odor seeping from a home in an upscale neighborhood led to the discovery of dozens of dogs and cats, many of them dead, inside the feces-ridden mansion, authorities said.

"Behind a mansion door there's a horror house," said James Lagrosa, head of the Bergen County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

At least 80 live cats and six dogs were removed Wednesday from the Saddle River house, although one kitten died later, he said. In the garage, authorities found 23 separate plastic bags that contained the remains of dead animals, some so decomposed it could not be determined what type of animal they were.

A delivery person alerted authorities Tuesday about the smell coming from the home of Cynthia and Philip Tamis and worried that a body was decomposing inside.

When authorities arrived and could not find anyone home, Lagrosa said, they entered the house and discovered the animals, pet food strewn around the floor and feces soiling every room.

The couple eventually came home and were surprised by the commotion, Lagrosa said.

A lawyer for the couple, Santo Bonanno, said his clients lived in the home for about eight years and had a long history of taking in sick and abandoned animals.

But, he said, they were going through severe financial hardships after Cynthia Tamis' personnel business went bankrupt in 2003. The couple had taken out a number of loans to prop up the business, and were eventually forced to sell their home last Friday in a foreclosure auction for $2.6 million, Bonanno said.

"These are true animal lovers," Bonanno said. "Things just got out of hand. ... She just fell apart."

Bonanno said the couple, who are currently staying at a motel, are cooperating with authorities.

Lagrosa said he intends to file charges against the couple. Meanwhile, he said authorities are still removing animals from the house.

Their attorney said they were animal lovers, things just got a little out of hand............. DUY YA THINK! Animal Lovers? Just nuts. People like this have more than just some kind of mental disorder, they have gone over the edge.

I have no use for dog or cat owners in general. Most think this world is their toilet, and your peace and quiet, and your property is of no concern to them. The majority of pet owners I have known are amongst the most inconsiderate and ingnorant people I have known.

1st people it-the house was sold in forcolsure. That mean's they didn't sell it. Another thing people buying house from an auction don't see the inside. They buy it from the court system in a sheiff sale. Also they will be given mental help. The police and animal/spca see that these kinds of people also get help. And for a house to get in that bad of shape it takes years not weeks. Their problems started long before that. So people to avoid unwanted animals for other people to SAVE don't bred get your pets spayed or neutered.

I hope they are billed for the cleanup. Hate to see the taxpayers get stuck with the bill on this one.

My late aunt was a lover of cats...cats everywhere..you were expected to give up your seat if a cat wanted it....This is a strange obsession. I had a neighbor who would rather pen thier two dogs up in a shed out back full of feces and basically ignor them rather than put them down. Ocassionally they would get loose and terrorize the the nieghbors because they were prone to bite. what is this craziness! Tell me this isn't love

Dear Crimeradius, I respect your opinion and undoubtedly you are more educated in this kind of matter than I. I did read the article and it said they were FORCED to sell their home last Friday. I have a couple of questions: #1 if they were selling their home for the best value possible, wouldn't someone have inspected the home prior to buying it and discover the morbid condition? #2 if they were up to their bootstraps in debt to where they could not ever recover and they knew they were hundreds of thousands in debt and in major distress, termoil and depressed, do you think that they may be a bit resentfull and maybe feel like well if they are gonna take our wonderful home we've had for 8 years lets at least screw it up for them? It is like a woman scorned who will set all of her husbands belongings on fire, even if it is to her disadvantage.

I'm sorry if they were true animal lovers they would have taken the sick animals to a vet or SPCA or Humane Society. Just leaving them locked in a house to die was just a way to ruin a good home.

crimeradius 11:57:11 AM Aug 17 2007

with all due respect the theory that the couple put all the cats in the house was to ruin it and make sure no one bought it is not logical. see, if you own a home and are trying to avoid foreclosure you sell it. which is apparently what this couple did by reading the article. if you sell the house at a loss, less than the amount you got a loan for, you still owe that balance to the bank Plus paying for your current living arrangements. if they wanted to "poison the well" so to speak, they were creating even a bigger set of problems than they already had. who would do something that will increase their debt?

There is only one other person on here that hit the nail on the head. These people aren't animal lovers or haters and they are not crazy either, they put all those cats in there to destroy the house that they knew was about to be foreclosed on. The smell of cat pee will be in that house forever! Noone is ever going to buy that house!

crimeradius 04:21:50 AM Aug 17 2007

oh yeah, selling their mansion for 2.5 million when the price they have in loans of 4 million does not make these people rich. before they feel into financial turmoil, the people took good care of the animals. loosing your status and place in life, whether you are a blue collar factory worker or an owner of a business, is very very disturbing. thats why some people commit murder-suicide with their families. the cant get over becoming poor. and some people have no experience with poverty and fall apart. have at least 10% of the compassion you have for the animals for human beings.

crimeradius 04:17:15 AM Aug 17 2007

i am an animal lover. but i find it disturbing that people have pity for animals and not for humans. these two people's lives were falling apart. they don't even have a place to live. having your world collapse in slow motion is a very horrible horrible thing. and mentally distressing. yes some animals died. but the two people had big hearts and took in animals that no one wanted. now the two people are not wanted by society and the animals well being is valued more than the humans.
