Senate Probes Televangelists' Finances

By Laura Strickler,

(Nov. 6) - CBS News has learned Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, is investigating six prominent televangelist ministries for possible financial misconduct.

Letters were sent Monday to the ministries demanding that financial statements and records be turned over to the committee by Dec. 6.

According to Grassley's office, the Iowa Republican is trying to determine whether or not these ministries are improperly using their tax-exempt status as churches to shield lavish lifestyles.

The six ministries identified as being under investigation by the committee are led by: Paula White, Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, Eddie Long, Kenneth Copeland and Benny Hinn. Three of the six - Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland and Creflo Dollar - also sit on the Board of Regents for the Oral Roberts University.

A spokesperson for Joyce Meyer Ministries provided CBS News with an IRS letter to the ministry dated October 10, 2007, that stated: "We determined that you continue to qualify as an organization exempt from Federal income tax." The letter could not be independently verified in time for this story. The ministry also pointed to audited financial statements for the last three years that are posted on the organization's website.

In a statement, Benny Hinn's spokesperson, Ronn Torossian, said the ministry was in the process of determining the best course of action in response to the Senate investigation. "World Healing Center Church complies with the laws that govern church and non-profit organizations and will continue to do so," Torossian wrote.

In a statement to CBS News, Creflo Dollar called his ministry an "open book" and said he would comply with any "valid request" from Grassley. But he noted that the inquiry raised questions that could "affect the privacy of every community church in America."

The other three ministries did not respond to requests for comment from CBS News on Monday.

Because they have tax status as churches, the ministries do not have to file IRS 990 forms like other non-profit organizations - leaving much financial information largely behind closed doors.

The letters sent Monday were the culmination of a long investigation fueled in part by complaints from Ole Anthony, a crusader against religious fraud who operates the Dallas-based Trinity Foundation, which describes itself as a watchdog monitoring religious media, fraud and abuse. "We've been working with them for two years," Anthony told CBS News. "We have furnished them with enough information to fill a small Volkswagen."

Anthony said after twenty years of working with media organizations to expose televangelists, he saw little reform. He says that's why he turned to another tactic, going straight to Grassley. He is confident that Grassley's inquiry will be different, "What we hope is that this will lead to reform in religious nonprofits."

The structure of many televangelist organizations - in which the leadership is often concentrated in one person or one family - has itself been the target of criticism. "Churches like these are ruled as a dictatorship," says Rod Pitzer, who directs research at Ministry Watch in North Carolina, which provides advice for donors to Christian organizations.

Pitzer welcomes the Senate committee investigation. Ministries lacking accountability, he says, "give a black eye to churches and Christians who are trying to do things in the right manner."

in response to belssedkfb's comments, i can only say the difference between the televangelists in question and the rest of the "sinning" world are the words nonprofit and tax exempt ...not to mention being wise stewarts and should be held accountable for how they spend somebody else's money. The rest of the businesses and Hollywood stars are not tax exempt and are not accepting donations in the name of God and enriching themselves in that manner. So there is a difference .Shame, shame on them who claim to do the Lord's work while enriching themselves and even teaching we should get our rewards on earth.God can bless you,it's true but even Christ taught us in his sermon on the Mount " 19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there

I will truly be excited when we see all world businesses and hollywood stars commanded by government to give the low down for personal financial status and accountability re:frivolous spending as well . I am certain they wont mind - right? I cant wait to see if there are any improper/illegal purchases they're hiding- and the course of action we are proposing to take to clean up ALL of americas rich and lavish. ..Speaking of which is anybody checking into Ole Anthony;s or Senator grassleys income/spending habits? I cant wait to see who is willing to stand and proclaim they are sinless and can therfore throw the first stone... Bring it on - who has the guts to stand and say they're hands are completely clean of all sin...cos if not- perhaps everybody best shut up and mind their business. Of course there are going to be imperfect men in every walk of life...including religion... is this supposed to be new news to everyone?? Bottom line, every one answers to God. Why not leave the only

I would be slow to judge. There is a spiritual war raging and not all meets the eye. But if there is to be a WITCH hunt, start with the RICH Roman Catholic Church who preach a FALSE gospel while THEY REPEATEDLY RAPE CHILDREN, rather then those who preach the true gospel as Jesus teaches. Just a word to the WISE.

I am not apart one of these mega churches but I do see they help people when it is impossible to get help from the government. If you make $1 over what they consider poor you can forget your tax paying dollars to ever get you through the hard times. If these minitries are stealing let God deal with them. Who is watching the members of Senate and Congress?

Fortunately we attend a wonderful Bible teaching church that embraces love, forgiveness and loving your neighbor as yourself. Our minister is strickly on salary and is the most knowledgeable, honest and decent person I've ever had the priviledge of knowing. He has a television ministry where all proceeds go to help those who are poor, hungry and in need. Last week, it was reported to the congregation that our church had feed a total of 113 thousand needy families in N. Georgia. and over one million pounds of food had been given, all donated by our members. Nothing is donated by outside businesses. This ministry has also built and paid for over 250 churches to be built in empoverished areas in India as well as several other countries.
Ministers are hired and paid by our church and everything that is needed is donated by our members. Last year the minister asked for a donation of 200 winter coats and the following Sunday over 1500 new coats were brought by its members to be distri
