Chase Winners and Losers
Tony Stewart survives two big crashes and a NASCAR ruling -- which overruled Regan Smith's last-lap pass -- to make his way to Victory Lane for the first time at Talladega and for the time this year. Check out who else this week at Talladega helped, or hurt, their chances to hoist the Sprint Cup.
John Bazemore, AP
Loser: Denny Hamlin went from leading the race to being rushed to the hospital. The No. 11 driver was leading midway though the race when his right front tire failed and his Toyota shot into the outside wall. "He's got a little headache, so they're just going to watch him. It was a scary deal," Joe Gibbs said. Hamlin finished 39th and dropped to last in the Chase field.
Mark J. Rebilas, US Presswire
Loser: Carl Edwards might be the Talladega's biggest loser. Edwards (No. 99) caused the 12-car accident that took out teammates Greg Biffle (No. 16) and Matt Kenseth (No. 17) with 16 laps to go. "This is my fault, I apologize to everyone caught up in the wreck," Edwards said.
Mark J. Rebilas, US Presswire
Loser: Dale Earnhardt Jr. was looking strong through out the race, but ended up in between the Roush Fenway duo of Biffle and Kenseth in the big crash. Junior fell two spots in the point standings and finished 28th.

Winner: Clint Bowyer had another solid race. The driver of the No. 7 car got his second top 5 finish of the Chase and moved up two places in the Sprint Cup point standings.

Winner: Jimmie Johnson deftly maneuvered through the wreckage and pushed his lead in the standings to 72 points over Edwards.

Pahokee High Mourns Captain
The entire town of Pahokee, Fla., is still grieving after the loss of Pahokee High School's football captain, Norman "Pooh" Griffith. The tight end and linebacker was discovered in Belle Glade, Fla., last Saturday with a gunshot wound to the head. Nearly a week after Griffith's tragic death, the Blue Devils took the field again Friday, but saw their 32-game unbeaten streak end with a 38-12 loss to Byrnes.
J. Pat Carter, AP
Griffith, 18, was a college prospect who drew interest from several Division I programs like Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh and Clemson. Police have arrested 16-year-old Willie Felton and 17-year-old Carl Lee Booth Jr., who were both charged with first-degree murder. Authorities say Griffith was shot as he drove away from a postgame dance following an altercation.

Griffith's mother received an outpouring of support from the community when Pahokee High took the field Friday night. The Griffiths were surrounded by those who wore a tribute ribbon or T-shirt with a picture of "Pooh." "This game means so much to everybody. Pooh would have wanted them to play," Jackie Griffith said.

Griffith's slaying -- the seventh young man shot recently in a couple of rival towns with only 20,000 people -- has residents worried that the rivalry over football is spinning out of control. Griffith's family actually postponed Pooh's funeral so Pahokee could focus on its nationally televised game against Byrnes. Here, Neshia Griffith holds one of the signs given to her grandmother Jackie by students from Pahokee.

There is even talk of postponing next month's game or moving it to a Saturday morning because of fears of additional violence. "Young people are dying, people are afraid to walk the streets, and kids in middle schools and elementary schools know what's going on," Belle Glade Mayor Steve Wilson said.
J. Pat Carter, AP
While the violence in the impoverished area of Florida continues to rage, the memory of Pahokee's beloved captain will live on. "I was just walking around the field looking at everything they did for him," Jackie Griffith said. "I'm not going to say he was the perfect son, but he was the perfect son for me."
