Britain Ends Extraterrestrial Probes

The British military closes its UFO hot line after nearly a half-century of investigations into possible sightings. The Defense Ministry says the measure will save $73,000 a year, but critics claim closing the hot line will threaten national security. "Who's to say there is nothing out there?" says one Briton. "If there is, it's a bit scary that there is no one to call to inform them of what you've seen."

An Australian man wearing a protective suit dives into the water -- and is stung in the face by a tiny, potentially lethal jellyfish. The Irukandji jellyfish is no bigger than a peanut and extremely venomous. The 22-year-old victim is rushed to a hospital's intensive care unit, where he remains in serious condition.

106 Perish in Russian Nightclub Fire

Russian officials and witnesses now say at least 106 people died and 130 were injured in a nightclub blaze sparked by onstage fireworks. Many perished in a rush for the building's only exit. "I'm simply devastated," says the father of one victim.

Authorities raid a Mexico City factory hidden inside a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center and rescue scores of people who had been forced to work 16-hour days under poor conditions. Some of the victims had been sexually abused, police say. Twenty-three people are charged with human trafficking in connection with the case.
